Dermal Fillers

Frequently asked

What are hyaluronic acid filler treatments?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a sugar produced by our own bodies to hydrate and lubricate tissues. Laboratories have found a way to polymerize this sugar to make it last longer when injected into the skin or the deeper structures of the face. Depending on the type of fillers, they can be used to restore or optimize the structure of the face (build volume in the temples, cheeks, nose, lips, jawline, and chin) or hydrate the skin and minimize fine lines and wrinkles (smile lines, cheek lines, marionette lines, etc.) HA fillers are the new contouring. Facial balancing and optimization with HA fillers have truly democratized access to societal standards of beauty for anyone willing to make that investment in themselves.

How long does a treatment take?

Treatments typically take only a few minutes to administer. However, each visit will likely take about 30-60 min as your practitioner will want to take photos, review your progress or tweak your treatment plan.

How does it feel? Does it hurt?

Surprisingly, the treatment is quite comfortable! We use the tiniest needles, vibration distraction, and talk therapy to help you through the process. Once patients look in the mirror and see their amazing results, they generally forget all about prior discomfort, if any.

What areas can I treat with HA fillers?

Anywhere there is a volume loss in the face is a great area for treatment with filler. Restoring the structure and contours of cheeks, jaw, temples or optimizing volume and proportion of lips, nose and chin are high impact treatments. HA fillers can also hydrate and soften folds in the face such as nasolabial and marionette lines, upper lip lines and cheek. Lightly linked hyaluronic acid (such as Skin boosters®) is also an excellent way to improve skin hydration and over-all quality and is a particularly good way to rejuvenate the skin of the face and neck.

How soon will I see the results? How long does it last?

Results are generally immediate but will continue to improve as the filler integrates your tissues fully. Results can generally last 6-12 months, depending on the type of HA filler used and the treated area. For example, dynamic areas of the face such as lips or nasolabial folds, tend to metabolize filler faster and only last 6 to 9 months. Whereas HA fillers used to fill deeper structures (deep cheek compartments or jawline) may last a year or more.

What are the risks involved?

Bruising or hematomas, swelling and asymmetries are unusual but represent the most common side effects. Granulomas, infection, skin necrosis and blindness have been reported but are extremely rare. In the hands of a properly trained practitioner, the risks of HA fillers are truly minimal. Although adverse events are always regrettable, rest assured that our team of nurses and physicians are available to respond quickly and manage any complication associated with HA filler treatments.

What to expect after treatment?

Immediately post treatment, you will notice more volume where the HA has been placed, making this immediate result very gratifying. There might be some moderate swelling for the first few days, or some occasional bruising. There might be some pinpoint redness or tenderness at the injection points. Depending on the injection technique, bolus might be felt on palpation for a few weeks after your treatment. Over the course of the next 2-4 weeks, the filler will integrate slowly and continue to improve the treated area.

Are there any contraindications?

Pregnant or nursing mothers are advised to wait until they are done to pursue their treatments.

Is there any down time to the treatment?

No, there is no downtime. If you follow the post-treatment instructions, you can pretty much go back to any of your regular activities.

How much does a treatment cost?

The price will vary according to the quantity used. For example, half a syringe can cost around 450$ and a full syringe 700$. Lips generally require ½ to 1½ syringes, cheeks, and temples ½ to 1 syringe per side, jawline 1-3 syringes, chin 1-3 syringes. When facial optimization is the goal, it often requires multiple syringes. To help patients, we have devised packages. Patients requiring treatment of multiple areas can purchase one of our facial contour packages: 3 syringes for 1800$, 4 syringes for 2200$, 5 syringes for 2700$ per treatment session.

I am concerned about these overfilled and puffy faces. I don’t want to look like a duck.

HA fillers aren’t the only treatments that may address your concerns. Overfilling to lift saggy skin and poor techniques can lead to filler migration contributing to a displeasing, unnatural look that has been caricaturized in the media. Combination therapy with prescription grade cosmeceuticals, lasers for resurfacing, Radiofrequency microneedling for skin tightening, PDO threads for lifting or other regenerative therapies allows us to be more conservative will filler treatments yielding better and more natural results. At your initial consultation you will receive a comprehensive treatment plan so you will be informed of the “buffet” of medical aesthetic therapies available to meet your beauty goals. Trust your practitioner to guide you on how to invest in these treatments to yield the highest return in the long term.
